Dieter Villinger studied graphic art at the Basel School of Applied Arts and at the Darmstadt School of Applied Arts from 1968 to 1971. He then went on to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became a master student of Günter Fruhtrunk. From 1978 to 1999, Villinger received numerous scholarships, residencies and art prizes. From 2000 to 2001, he realised the installation Gelb.Blau at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences. In 2012, Villinger was accepted into the Deutscher Artistbund
In his oeuvre, Villinger explores the way in which colour is applied and the moving, relief-like surface. He works with a brush and viscous paint mass, which is worked into the unprimed canvas from the edges to the centre. In some cases, Villinger applies so much colour that it is set in motion by gravity. Vertical colour gradients emerge and break through the horizontal traces of movement. The painting process remains visible on the canvas and illustrates the power of colour, which is both the means of representation and the object of representation.
