Susanne Stähli’s colored ink drawings are among the most interesting groups of her works on paper. In these pieces, Stähli works with liquid ink and very thin, layered coats of color.
The interplay of color, water, transparency, and chance is crucial to this process. The ink is heavily diluted and applied in multiple layers. It flows, and the pigments accumulate at the edges. Each layer has a different shape and size than the one beneath it and alters its color. This creates fields of color with an almost physical depth. Stähli refers to this principle as “controlled chance.”
