Alan Ebnother is one of the artists with whom Galerie Braun has been collaborating for a very long time. As early as 1991, we offered him an exhibition; at the time, we were one of the first galleries in Europe. This was followed by numerous solo and group exhibitions covering all phases of his work. These include the ‘Paintings on Paper’, which were created in 2002 in his new studio in New Mexico following a lengthy break from painting. The catalogue is still available. In September 2006, the exhibition ‘Farbmalerei anders’ (Colour Painting with a Difference) will open, featuring six other artists.
Ebner’s works can be found in museums in the USA and in Zurich, as well as in private collections in America and Europe. We hold works from every period of his career.

Ebnother, a trained ballet dancer who performed first with the Stuttgart company and then with the Hamburg company, began using a palette knife and brush after 1975 to transpose the pas de deux onto the canvas: He piles the pigments thickly, reaches into the monochrome green surface and dances across the wet paint with a stroke of the palette knife or brush; the smooth surface is shaken by barely perceptible ripples of colour. In this way, the artist gives the paint form and shape – and only in this way, for he allows neither frame nor underdrawing to provide a firm anchor. Even the support itself seems to vanish beneath the impasto application of paint; it is only in the works on paper that the standard painting support holds its own against the paint.
