At first glance, this work appears to be an abstract, monochrome black, geometric painting with highly simplified forms. However, the surface is not flat. Øgaard first applies sand and paint to the canvas. She then applies a further layer of sand, cement, plaster and paint in certain areas. After a long drying process, she scrapes out fine lines and removes wider lines and areas using a knife and a palette knife. In this way, the painting becomes a sculpture.
The relief-like surface creates shadows. If the light changes or if one moves to the side, the work also changes. Suddenly, one edge may become clearly visible, whilst another disappears. A surface may appear flat at one moment and deep the next.
The colour, which is usually white or black, plays a secondary role. The work derives its interest from the varying levels and textures – rough, matt and glossy areas.
The picture does not depict anything; it is about perception, which depends on the light and the viewer’s position.
