Annegret Hoch is interested in the “facts of painting”. She spans an arc from the traditional panel painting to the question of how far the playing field of painting can be expanded. Strong colors and a sophisticated handling of spatiality are constants in her work. In this three-artist exhibition, we limit ourselves to the group of her panel paintings, primarily “Gedankenknödel.”

Each of Gerwin Schmidt’s paintings restages the primordial painterly scene: the moment in which color, applied to a limited surface, acquires meaning. This meaning arises in that doublings occur in that very moment – doublings that build up internal tensions and allow them to become aesthetically productive:
The color is as much ‘paint’ as it is ‘color’, both a material substance made of pigment and binder that occasionally runs across the surface of the painting as a color nose, and an immaterial color value that enters into coloristic exchange with other color values in the same painting.
