Ruri Matsumoto’s current works are based on a large spatial installation that she realised in 2012 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where she studied under Professor Katherina Grosse. The insights she gained from her work in real space led to a paradigm shift in her painting, which can be seen in her new works. The Tokyo-born artist found sources in art history and philosophy that encouraged her to pursue the path she had taken with the installation in her painting. For example, the pointillists Seurat and Signac had already experimented with optical mixtures at the end of the 19th century. In philosophy, it was the epistemological writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty that led the way.
