Ruri Matsumoto at Klaus Braun
The Japanese artist Ruri Matsumoto, born in Tokyo in 1981, explores what colour painting is (still) capable of in her works now on display at the Klaus Braun Gallery in Stuttgart.
Formerly a master student of Katharina Grosse in Düsseldorf, another voice almost seems to be added to that of the painter Helmut Federle.
An exciting mixture.

The Japanese artist Ruri Matsumoto, who was born in Tokyo in 1981 and was a master student of Katharina Grosse, explores the possibilities of painting and dynamic geometric abstraction in her works. In doing so, she consistently develops her own visual language, which, in addition to pure colour, also allows forms to contribute to the pictorial content.
The paintings, most of which have simple titles such as “Broken Line Botanical Collage” or “Floating Form”, detach themselves from the actual location that the artist had in mind when she created them. This allows the viewer to give the painting their own emotional interpretation. The artist gains control over the work by accepting coincidences, leaving strips of colour that are damaged or repeatedly applying and removing the adhesive tape. She determines when the place, the memory she wants to depict, has become one with the painting and the work is complete. Spatial imaginaries have been developed.
