Since 2015, José Heerkens has been working on the series Evensong, whose title goes back to the light mood in the evening. In addition, Evensong refers to the chorally performed evening praise of the Anglican church. For Heerkens, Evensong is an important series for which new paintings are constantly being created. The artist works on pure linen, which she prepares with transparent organic glue. The painting L 39 of 2020 is dominated by five horizontal bars of different colors, chromatically graduated shades of pink and brown. This harmony of colors is particularly close to the artist’s heart: “When I get stuck with a painting, it is almost always triggered by the wrong color […]. By using a different shade of color, it’s possible to open up the painting and continue working.”
